Everyone has a different facial skin type and can change with age. In addition, facial skin type can also be influenced by other factors, such as genetic factors, certain diseases, and environmental factors, such as prolonged exposure to sunlight, dust, and pollution.

Certain habits can also have an impact on changing skin types, such as smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages.

5 Facial Skin Types You Need to Know

The structure and type of facial skin that a person has is determined by several factors, namely:

  • The water content in the skin which will affect the elasticity of the skin
  • Oil content that affects skin softness and nutrition
  • The level of skin sensitivity to certain substances or materials

Based on the three factors above, facial skin types can be divided into several categories, namely:

1. Normal facial skin

This skin type tends to have a balance between the amount of water and oil content, so it is not too dry but not too oily.

This type of facial skin usually rarely has skin problems, is not too sensitive, looks radiant, and the pores are almost invisible. Normal skin types are also easier to care for.

2. Dry facial skin

Dry facial skin generally occurs due to low levels of moisture in the outermost layer of skin. This causes dry skin to easily crack and experience cracks on the surface of the skin.

Owners of dry facial skin usually have skin pores that are almost invisible, the outer surface of the skin looks rough and dull, and the skin is less elastic. This skin type is also more easily reddened, itchy, scaly, and inflamed.

Dry skin can be caused by genetic factors, age, hormonal changes, cold weather, sun exposure, prolonged hot showers, side effects of medications, or ingredients in soaps, cosmetics, and cleansers.

3. Oily facial skin

Oily facial skin types tend to be slippery and shiny due to the production of excess oil or sebum. Sebum is produced naturally by the oil glands or glands sebaceous below the surface of the skin.

Although sebum functions to protect and moisturize the skin, excess sebum will cause facial skin to become oily, clogged pores, and make the skin prone to acne. High sebum production can be influenced by genetic factors, hormonal changes, or stress.

Oily skin types tend to have large pores, look shiny but dull, and are usually accompanied by blackheads, pimples, and black spots.

4. Sensitive facial skin

Sensitive skin types are generally very sensitive and easily experience allergies or irritation and rashes as a reaction to certain factors, such as the environment, food, or the use of cosmetic products.

Sensitive facial skin is easy to peel, itchy, dry, red, and feels sore (breakout) when there is contact with various things that can trigger the appearance of sensitive skin symptoms.

5. Combination skin

Combination skin type is a combination of oily skin and dry skin. Someone with this facial skin type has oily skin in the T zone, namely the chin, nose, and forehead area, as well as dry skin in the cheek area.

This type of facial skin can be influenced by genetic factors and the increase in hormones during puberty.

The Importance of Caring for Facial Skin According to its Type

Each facial skin type has different needs. Some types of facial skin even require more care and attention than other skin types. That’s why facial skin care products and cosmetics are made with different formulas according to skin type.

The use of skin care products that are not in accordance with the type of facial skin can cause acne, acne to get worse, facial skin to become very dry, and the emergence of various other problems on the facial skin.

Here is how to care for facial skin based on skin type:

1. Normal facial skin care

Treatment of normal facial skin types tends to be easy. You can simply use regular facial skin care or specially formulated for normal skin.

Use a facial cleanser with mild chemicals and avoid scrubbing your face too harshly. You can rinse your face with warm water, then dry with a soft towel.

2. Dry facial skin care

To treat dry facial skin, use a facial cleanser with ingredients that can moisturize facial skin, such as emollients, and avoid products that contain alcohol or fragrance.

After cleaning your face, you can use a moisturizer so that your skin doesn’t dry out easily. Also, avoid taking too long a bath and washing your face with warm water.

3. Oily facial skin care

There are various ways to treat oily facial skin, one of which is by washing your face regularly 2 times a day with a face wash that contains glycerin.

After cleaning, you can use other skin care products, namely astringents or toners containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid. In addition, choose cosmetic products with water content and labeled non-comedogenic which does not cause clogging of the pores.

You can also use parchment paper and a special face mask for oily skin to remove excess oil on your face. There are several natural ingredients that can be used as face masks, including honey, aloe vera, tomatoes, and jojoba oil.

In addition to the above methods, owners of oily skin types should also avoid unhealthy foods, such as fried foods, fast food, and foods with high sugar content.

4. Sensitive facial skin care

Sensitive facial skin care can be done by knowing the triggers that cause allergic reactions or irritation. Use a mild facial soap and rinse with warm water. Try not to rub your face too hard when washing your face.

Owners of sensitive facial skin are also advised not to use facial care products that contain alcohol, acids, and fragrances because these ingredients easily cause facial irritation.

You can use facial care products that contain aloe vera, chamomilegreen tea, polyphenols, and wheat.

5. Combination facial skin care

The best way to treat combination skin is to use cleansing and moisturizing products that are specially formulated for combination skin types. This product is able to reduce oil levels in the T zone area while moisturizing the cheek area.

Clean your face 2 times a day regularly. Avoid using cleaning products that contain alcohol, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. These ingredients can cause facial skin to become dry.

If this method is not effective, you can try using a cleansing product for dry facial skin in the cheek area and a special product for oily skin for the T zone.

Whatever your facial skin type, keep using sunscreen to protect your skin from the dangers of ultraviolet rays. Don’t forget to clean your facial skin from make up before you sleep.

The skin care method above should also be accompanied by a healthy lifestyle, by consuming nutritious foods, drinking lots of water, limiting alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking.

If you’re still not sure what type of skin you have or how to treat your skin the best for you, it’s best to consult a dermatologist. Do not just try facial care products, so that your skin does not experience problems.
